Since our last edition, there have been 55 incidents from the construction, utility and quarrying industries reported to WorkSafe, including one fatality.
The incidents included 13 lacerations, six fractures and six electric shocks

I am pleased to announce the Victorian industry standard for civil construction A guide to managing safety has been published and is now available on the WorkSafe website.
Development of this new industry standard was initiated after the construction industry’s peak safety forum, Foundations for Safety Victoria (FFSV), identified there was a need for specific guidance for the civil construction industry. Concerns were raised that the existing guidance focused too generally on housing or general construction sector requirements and was not applicable to the civil construction environment.

Man dies at Doreen building site
A Kilmore man died in hospital on July 6, several days after falling 2.4m from a house under construction at in Melbourne’s north.

Construction giants admit to OHS failings
Two of Australia’s biggest construction companies, John Holland and Theiss, have entered into a $225 000 enforceable undertaking. The companies will fund research into best-practice contractor engagement and management. This enforceable undertaking comes after two concrete panels, each weighing 11.3 tonnes, fell from a contractor’s truck in 2006.

All Certificates of Competency have expired
From 1 July 2012 all Certificates of Competency issued by WorkSafe Victoria are expired and employers must not allow people to perform high risk work without a valid licence to perform high risk work. These new licences must have a photo. Visit the WorkSafe website to read more and see how you can transfer your Certificate of Competency to a licence.

Worker back after slicing finger
Cutting off more than two centimetres of his middle finger has not stopped a construction worker in Canberra returning to work at the Cotter Dam. He’s now training other carpenters to avoid similar accidents.

Excavator rolls over while driver on break
The driver had parked the excavator on a pile of sand and returned to find it tipped over. The only apparent damage was a broken window in the cab of the excavator, along with a hefty bill to hire a crane to pull it upright.
